Dataphyte’s 2021 in Review: Rocky Climbs, Pleasant Views
If we review years like movies, 2021 is a worthy sequel to 2020 the year everything shut down. From new covid variants to economic crises and mother nature’s rage at how we have treated the planet to Nigeria-specific problems like banditry and kidnapping, terrorism, protests and riots; 2021 felt in parts like the world was in a never ending Squid Game.
The fact that you’re here at the other end of this newsletter, hopefully, excited to read from us and not wondering why you are getting spammed, you’re the real winner and we are grateful for you!
For us at Dataphyte, 2-year old neophytes in the media and data for development sector, it has been an uphill climb but the view on the way to the top has been worthwhile. Navigating the increasingly dangerous media freedom, freedom of expression, open data, digital rights and freedom terrain proved a worthy challenge that helped us develop much needed muscles.
We grew strong muscles by amplifying the voice of truth by liberating public data, telling data-driven stories and building technology tools that influence practices and policies that give voice to and empower vulnerable and underserved groups.
As we doubled down and did our work, both international and local organisations noticed us. We are very excited about international partnerships with Statista in Germany, Stage Media in Liberia, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Daily Trust Foundation, RadioNow, Connected Development, CLEEN Foundation, JAIRAA and grateful to the National Endowment for Democracy, Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), Stanford Journalism and Democracy Initiative, Open Contracting Partnership, and Open Knowledge Foundation for their investment in our vision. Media Development Investment Fund’s (MDIF) seed funding to Dataphyte was the icing on the cake that is two years in the making.
But we are most grateful to you; for reading our reports, following our work and giving feedback that allows us to adjust and do better.
So, Thank You for allowing us to be part of your 2021!
