From Nigeria to the Ends of the Earth: The Growing Crisis of Killings and Nigerian Displacement
As the world marked World Refugee Day on June 20, 2025, and in the shadow of yet another gruesome attack, a sobering reality endures for hundreds of thousands of Nigerians uprooted by unrelenting violence.
According to the latest data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 410,000 Nigerian refugees are now taking shelter in just three neighboring countries, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad, after fleeing a wave of insecurity that continues unabated.
As of June 1, 2025, a total of 410,826 Nigerian refugees were recorded across the Lake Chad Basin. Of these, Niger hosts the largest share at 64%, followed by Cameroon with 31% and Chad with 5%.
