In April 2025, the average cost of refilling a 5kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder in Nigeria rose to ₦7,886, the highest amount in the last ten months. This surge follows a consistent monthly increase in gas prices.
According to the national president of the Nigerian Association of Liquified Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Mr. Oladapo Olatunbosun, the price surge has been linked to deregulation, allowing market forces to set prices.
However, data suggests that changes in the price of diesel appear to have a stronger impact. Diesel powers most LPG delivery trucks, and as diesel prices climbed, so did the cost of cooking gas.
This shift increases out-of-pocket expenses over time, further affecting individuals' finances, which may eventually lead to a return to firewood and charcoal as cooking gas becomes unaffordable, especially for low-income households.
An analysis of monthly data from April 2024 to April 2025 reveals an increase in the 5kg LPG average prices. Although the price briefly plunged between May and July 2024, and between December 2024 and January 2025.
