According to data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), females accounted for more than half of all deaths caused by mental disorders in Nigeria, a gender disparity that poses a serious public health concern.
Globally, mental health conditions such as depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders are significant contributors to mortality. While these conditions affect both men and women, Nigerian women are particularly vulnerable due to early and frequent exposure to trauma, including gender-based violence and maternal health challenges.
Of all deaths attributed to mental disorders in Nigeria, 59% were among women, while men accounted for 41%, highlighting a significant gender disparity in mental health outcomes.
